#WhatsTrending on social media this month?

As summertime slowly comes to an end and we begin to get geared up for fall it’s time to take a look at some of the biggest trends that have been taking the month of August by storm. So without further ado lets jump into what’s trending for the month of August.

pokemon go

This one is no surprise. Pokemon GO has been taking the world by storm, and giving 90’s kids everywhere a big dose of nostalgia as they hunt for the fictional characters. But it’s not just those who we’re born in the 90’s that are loving this game, people of all ages are obsessing over it as well. So what’s the big deal? Pokemon GO uses the player’s location settings on their smart phone to display a map of where they are. Features on the map include PokeStops and Pokemon gyms. PokeStops provide players with items they need to progress through the game, and Pokemon gyms give players the opportunity to battle with other players. As the player moves around within their real world surroundings their avatar within the game moves along the games map, and Pokemon will spawn randomly, giving the player and opportunity to catch them. The game has been massively popular and has been bringing people together from all walks of life, as they run into each other while playing. So, will it be going away anytime soon? Only time will tell.

suicide squad

Based on the DC comics of the same name, Suicide Squad is a movie about super-villains, rather than your standard super heroes. The movie burst into theaters on August 5th, to generally negative reviews from critics. However, that hasn’t stopped fans of the franchise from swarming the theaters to see it. The film has grossed $161 million for its five-day total in the US alone putting it just behind the five-day total for Deadpool which grossed $163.7 million. The film is predicted to bring in more big bucks as it continues its stay in theaters, the only question is: will you be seeing it?

rio olympics

Though the Summer Olympics have just ended we’ve still got Olympic fever. The Olympics ended with several big U.S. wins, one of the biggest of course came from none other than Michael Phelps. Phelps walked home with 6 medals, 5 of them gold, finishing his Olympic career with 28 medals total, 23 of them gold making Phelps the most decorated Olympian in history. While Phelps plans to retire from the Olympic life, we’re hoping he comes back in 2020.

Houston native, Simone Manuel managed to break a record and make history at this year’s Olympic games. The 20-year-old became the first African-American woman to win an event in Olympic swimming as she and Penny Oleksiak of Canada tied at 52.70 seconds. Simone walked away with four medals total, two gold and two silver. Another fellow Houstonian, Simone Biles completed her round of Olympic gymnastics trials with 5 medals, 4 gold, and one bronze. Biles is the fourth American female gymnast to win 5 medals in a single Olympics. Her signature move, The Biles: a double layout with a half twist and a blind landing is no joke, as her scores dominated her fellow competitors.

stranger things

This Netflix series Stranger Things may have debuted in mid-July, but it has seen nothing but a whirlwind of praise from viewers and critics alike in the weeks since its release. The 8-episode series is set in the 1980’s and follows the mysterious disappearance of 12-year-old Will Byers. As Joyce, Will’s mother, launches an investigation into his disappearance with the local police force, they unravel a series of unexplainable mysteries involving secret government experiments, supernatural forces, and a girl who may have the key to finding Will. The series is visually stunning. Paying homage to Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, and nearly any prominent filmmaker or writer from the 1980’s. But that’s not the show’s only appeal. The ensemble cast, which includes 80’s screen queen Winona Ryder as Will’s mother Joyce, keeps you wanting more. This series has many twists and turns along the way as the hunt for Will turns darker and darker. We recommend you watch this one with the lights off, shades drawn, and plenty of popcorn.
