4 Ways to Beat Writer’s Block

Let’s face it - we are all susceptible to writer’s block. As professional tweeters, bloggers and ad writers, churning out content can be a breeze, but when writer’s block strikes, well, it hits hard. You’ll find yourself staring at a blank Word document and the blinking cursor, time will pass by and still, no sentences, let alone words are coming out.

Writer’s block hits everyone, but don’t let it bring you down. Here are 4 ways to beat it!

I repeat, step away from the computer

When you’re stuck and can’t seem to find any inspiration, it may be a good idea to step away from your desk and regroup. We spend so much time staring at our computer screens and quite frankly, staring at a blank screen will probably get you nowhere. Go for a walk and pick up a cup of freshly brewed Joe, or just sit outside for a while. Sometimes, all we need to cure a case of writer’s block is to step away for a moment.

Read, read, read

At SBC, our Think Tank is full of books and magazines that are chockfull of inspiration. Pick up a book or log onto BuzzFeed, Mashable or AdAge and read a few articles that are related to the topic you’re writing about. Maybe you’ll come across a word that will jump out at you and inspire you to keep on writing.

Brainstorm with your team

There’s nothing wrong with asking for help. Ask your co-workers if they have 5 or 10 minutes to spare and go through a few of your ideas and bounce a few ideas off of one another. Getting input from a different perspective will really help alleviate your writer’s block. After all, teamwork makes the dream work!

Write an outline

Writing a 1,000-word piece in one sitting (especially when you have Writer’s Block) can be excruciatingly difficult. Instead, trying outlining your topic. Jot down the main bullet points and create a few sub-topics. Share your outline with a co-worker and get their input. They may have a few ideas to add too!

For any writer, not finding inspiration can be incredibly difficult. The next time you find yourself staring at a blank Word document, try these 4 methods of beating writer’s block. Do you have any writing tips to share? Let us know what they are on Twitter!
